# Business Verification

> An overview of Toden Business Verification (KYB): registry checks, company documents, key people, a video, and where to start.

Business Verification answers two questions: is this a real, registered company, and who are the people behind it? A registry lookup proves the company exists. It does not prove the person applying controls it, which is why a full business application also collects documents, verifies the applicant, and follows directors and owners.

## What a business verification covers

| Step              | What happens                                                                                      |
| ----------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Registry lookup   | The company is looked up in its official register, by registration number                         |
| Company documents | Documents such as the certificate of incorporation are read and compared with the registry record |
| The applicant     | The person applying verifies their own identity                                                   |
| Key people        | Directors and beneficial owners are identified, screened and, where you require it, verified      |
| Decision          | Your rules approve, decline or send the application to review                                     |

## Checking one company without an application

To look up a company from your back office, with no customer present, use a [one-off business check](/user-verification/server-api/one-off-checks). It needs a secret key and returns the registry record.
